An innovative Step On The Way To Sustainability
At Chiltern Carpet Tiles we pride ourselves on caring for the environment, not just with words, but with practical innovations that don’t just promise to make a difference, but really do.

One such step is our new tile recycling capability, which is already recycling all factory waste into new production and can recycle old tiles into the backing of new ones.

The process begins with the shredding of the old tiles into small pieces approximately 1cubic cm . This takes place on site in a purpose built shredder installed at an investment cost of €40,000.

The shredded tile particles are incorporated into the bitumen backing of new production. This is possible thanks to our new and innovative continuous on-line bitumen mixing process, which enables full incorporation of the recycled material into the bitumen mix.

The result is a backing giving even greater strength to the resulting tile because of the cross-linking effect of the recycled yarn within the bitumen mix.

We’re very proud of this innovation, which is one of many practical ways in which we are working to become more environmentally sustainable – not just in theory, but also in practice.

All our carpets now carry GUT environmental certification and are produced to exacting ISO 9002 standards.

We welcome the opportunity to show you this recycling initiative, along with the rest of our modern production facilities.

<< back to our sustainability pledge.

  • Waste material from our own production is collected on a conveyor which takes it across to a purpose built shredder for reprocessing. Old tiles for recycling are also introduced at this point.
  • The shredder installation itself.
  • A shot taken of the shredder installation on the inside. Waste material– in this case, the unusable edge of the tile material once the tiles have been cut from it– is cut up by the rotating knives.
  • From the shredder the material is sent into the on-line bitumen mix (down the chute). The incorporation into the backing takes place in the on-line mixer (the green machinery on the left) and actually enhances the new tiles.
